Songs of the year-Brick to a Million by Master P, Alley Boy, and Fat Trel
Songs of the year-Brick to a Million by Master P, Alley Boy, and Fat Trel
by Dan-O
Master P is back! It’s kind of surreal since No Limit was one of the most publicly adored and critically detested movements in hip hop history. P looked around at the hip hop landscape and saw a bunch of new artists (like Trel and Alley Boy) who owed a lot of their style to his movement, so he just picked up where he left off.
From the first seconds of the song you can place this track in the No Limit catalog, from the sharp piano stabs to the dope boy talk; this could have been off Ghetto Dope for god’s sake. Hearing P lace a catchy hook involving corn chips in 2013 is straight up time machine crazy.
The Al Capone mixtape that this song is off of is basically a collective effort between the three parties on this song. They released a follow up tape (not as good) but the group dynamic is great for them since on their own Trel and Alley Boy have a hard time catching buzz. A lot of the actual heavy lifting verse wise is done by the new kids while P acts as expert conductor, beat picking, chorus lacing, and generally energizing the track. I hope they keep pumping these kinds of tracks out; the music is fun as all get out and go. I also have a weak spot for Fat Trels snarling frog monster voice.

Song of the Year-Submarine Bass Face(Turn Me Up!) by Fresh Daily featuring Suede Jury and Melo X
Song of the Year-Submarine Bass Face(Turn Me Up!) by Fresh Daily featuring Suede Jury and Melo X
by Dan-O
NY is so deep with talent that Fresh Daily might not register for everyone and while the converse sponsored mixtape(The Brooklyn Good Guy) this comes from is good, nothing on it is better than this. The baseline is absolutely sensational; all verses here are dope (features from Suede Jury and Melo-X). The vibe is throwback style which some people find distasteful since it implies we need to throwback cause music now sucks, which isn’t true. When done wrong throwback NY style can also get boring. Beyond all that madness Submarine Bass Face is one of the best songs of the year for that electronic frog groan and the line “B-boy stance posted up to destroy your EQ.”

Songs of the Year: CJ-Set It On Fire
Songs of the Year: CJ-Set It On Fire
by Dan-O
IAMSU! heads a group called the HBK Gang from the bay area and they are a ratchet music factory. If you are not familiar with the term it is what we all agreed to call the residual effects of Hyphy on bay area music. The term is a bit disingenuous but at least we don’t have to call it post-hyphy. Too many things are post other things.
CJ is a key part of the group and really interesting, on the mixtape before CJ 2.0 he seemed a bit too whispery for his own good but on 2.0 he cranks out jams like this that are immensely fun to listen too with odd lyrics that are weirder when you catch them. HBK is an immense sex joke improv group with members out-bragging and out-grossing one another. So when CJ says “I told her no hands like she playing soccer, hit her, delete her twitter than maybe block her” I couldn’t help but picture everyone in the studio laughing. This song is a good example of what CJ and HBK do: great beats, hooks, and misogynistic lyrics in as playful a way as they can be done. The songs can sound too similar at times but if they are all equally fun how bad can it be?
