Not having a signature sound can be a real strength for a rap producer. It allows them to fit into any container, adjust to the next opportunity without replicating. Having a signature sound comes with advantages as well. The people who approach you want what you are good at, which is nice. The key is that you need to be in the continual process of growing and maturing your signature sound. If it doesn’t move it will likely die. For someone who made his first beat in 2019 MIGHTHEALTHY has made a splash with drums and volume. I always think of him as merry prankster, someone who lives to pull in sounds you might find annoying and make them part of a beat you adore. If you listen to your favorite MIGHTHEALTHY beat it might be built on a screeching sound, a feedback buzz, something jarring from the unpleasant texture tree that he builds a whole puzzle around. These are the five artists who would benefit the most from a fully produced album with the merry prankster:
1. Inspectah Deck-MIGHTYHEALTHY makes beats that are so loud your voice needs authority to come over top of them. Who best to do that? Who has the most authority in their voice, delivers classic verses and NEEDS someone to produce them to the finish line of a classic album? No one more than Deck. Anyone who has heard MIGHTYHEALTHY knows that he lives and breathes that Wu energy. Shooting bolts of that electrical current back into one of the architects of it would be his greatest victory. Czarface has been awesome but the last solo Deck was 2019 and this underground scene was built from the pulverizing attention to detail Deck gave to every verse during that Wu come up. I want a classic for him and I bet good money MIGHTYHEALTHY would deliver it.
2. Planet Asia-How are you an all time great and underrated at the same time? The answer for Planet Asia is that he makes it all seem too easy. As a creator he’s consistent, experiments with new producers and collaborators and never gives anything but a great verse. A true professional whose meticulous ease fools fans into thinking he doesn’t have the dramatic arc of some other artists. MIGHTYHEALTHY is a producer not a beatmaker. He would have sounds in mind, a direction to pitch. The two would build together and he would sneak in sounds Planet Asia is not used to. A loud impeccable varied album that comes out flawless would be a teachable moment for fans. The lesson: none of this is easy, you are tuned into the highest level.
3. Ty Farris-The Detroit spitter pumps out heat! His album from March (Malice At The Palace) produced by Machacha is fun. Ty is a natural spitter whose punch lines pack muscle. I stay with Ty because he’s always trying out new things…specifically his project with Sebb Bash from last year was a new lane. The wrinkle in this collaboration would be speed. MIGHTHEALTHY hates slow beats and has lots of BPM takes. Ty gets comfortable sinking into a slower thump, anyone whose heard his No Cosign Just Cocaine series can testify that when you throw Ty a fastball he finds it and everyone gets to round the bases.
4. Vic Spencer-Vic is a rappers rapper who can deliver a great verse at any time. What I love about him is that his work ethic is phenomenal and masterminded. Vic has a special relationship with August Fanon where the make music unlike any in his catalog. He has another special relationship with SonnyJim that comes out totally different. Vic needs these relationships to challenge his long honed abilities. He needs to not get bored. MIGHTYHEALTHY would do what he did with King Micah The Infamous on the KINGMIGHTY series. Try to throw monkey wrenches and volume at the confidence of Vic so we get a different kind of performance, not a smug growl but a roar. I love Vic exploring and this collaboration would help both of them immensely.
5. Recognize Ali-I know MIGHTYHEALTHY has heard Ali because I know he is a big fan of Dueling Experts. Ali’s work ethic is high level, he already has 2 albums this year (Back To Mecca II and Guerrilla Dynasty 2) and likely isn’t done. Ali is a ferocious rhyme animal with a hypnotic flow who lives to breath life into classic East Coast production. Those are exactly the type of rappers who sound amazing on MIGHTYHEALTHY production. He accentuates the best characteristics of this kind of flow and prefers to let any concept hang loosely around banging beats and nasty rhymes. These two hold too much in common for this to be anything short of fantastic.
